Author Guidelines

The Nigerian Journal of Transplantation welcomes high-quality manuscripts that advance knowledge, practice, and research in transplantation medicine and related fields. Authors are encouraged to read these guidelines carefully before submitting their manuscripts.

1. Scope of the Journal

The Journal publishes original contributions in:

  • Organ and tissue transplantation

  • Immunology and transplant biology

  • Organ procurement and preservation

  • Transplant surgery and clinical practice

  • Ethics, policy, and legislation in transplantation

  • Dialysis and renal replacement therapy

  • Transplant pharmacology

  • Case reports and clinical innovations

  • Reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses

2. Manuscript Categories

2.1 Original Research Articles

  • Maximum 4,000 – 5,000 words

  • Structured abstract (250 – 300 words)

  • Sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion

2.2 Review Articles

  • Maximum 5,000 – 6,000 words

  • Comprehensive and evidence-based

  • Abstract required

2.3 Case Reports

  • Maximum 2,000 words

  • Abstract (150 – 200 words)

  • Must include informed consent

2.4 Short Communications

  • Maximum 1,500 words

  • Brief reports of novel findings

2.5 Editorials / Commentaries

  • By invitation or proposal

  • Maximum 1,000 – 1,500 words

2.6 Letters to the Editor

  • Maximum 800 words

  • No abstract required

3. Manuscript Preparation

3.1 Formatting

  • Use Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)

  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt

  • Double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins

  • Number pages consecutively

3.2 Title Page

Include:

  • Full title of the manuscript

  • Author names and affiliations

  • Corresponding author’s email and phone number

  • ORCID iDs (optional but encouraged)

  • Funding statement

  • Conflict of interest declaration

3.3 Abstract and Keywords

  • Structured abstract for research articles

  • 3 – 6 keywords using MeSH terms where possible

3.4 Tables and Figures

  • Number sequentially (Table 1, Figure 1, etc.)

  • Provide clear titles and legends

  • Submit figures in high-resolution JPEG or PNG

  • Indicate approximate placement in the text

3.5 References

  • Use Vancouver style

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness

  • Use recent and relevant citations

4. Ethical Requirements

4.1 Human and Animal Research

Manuscripts must comply with:

  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval

  • Declaration of Helsinki

  • National and institutional ethical guidelines

4.2 Informed Consent

Required for:

  • Case reports

  • Images of patients

  • Any identifiable information

4.3 Conflict of Interest

All authors must disclose:

  • Financial relationships

  • Institutional affiliations

  • Any potential bias

4.4 Plagiarism

THE JOURNAL uses plagiarism-detection tools. Manuscripts with significant overlap will be rejected.

5. Submission Process

5.1 Online Submission

Submit manuscripts through the Journal submission portal (or email, if applicable). Include:

  • Manuscript file

  • Cover letter

  • Ethical approval documents

  • Permissions for reproduced materials

5.2 Cover Letter Requirements

The cover letter should:

  • State the manuscript’s originality

  • Confirm it is not under review elsewhere

  • Highlight its relevance to transplantation practice

  • Identify the corresponding author

6. Peer Review Process

  • The Journal uses double-blind peer review

  • Typical review time: 4 – 8 weeks

  • Authors may be asked to revise their manuscripts

  • Final acceptance is at the discretion of the editorial board

7. Publication Charges

  • No submission fee

  • Article Processing Charges (APC) of One hundred dollars ($50) apply

  • Waivers may be available for early-career researchers or special cases

8. Post-Acceptance Requirements

8.1 Proofreading

Authors will receive page proofs for final corrections. Only minor changes are allowed at this stage.

8.2 Copyright Agreement

Authors must sign the Journal Copyright Transfer & Publishing Agreement.

8.3 Open Access Licensing

Authors choosing Open Access must select a Creative Commons license.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines above.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Permissions Policy

1. Reproduction and Reuse

Permission must be obtained from the Transplant Association of Nigeria for:

  • Reproduction of any article, figure, table, or substantial excerpt.

  • Distribution of The Journal content for commercial or educational purposes.

  • Adaptation or translation of published material.

Requests should include:

  • Full citation of the material.

  • Intended use and audience.

  • Format of reproduction (print, digital, broadcast, etc.).

2. Author Rights

Authors may:

  • Share their published article on personal websites, institutional repositories, or academic platforms.

  • Use portions of their work in future publications, presentations, or teaching materials.

  • Reproduce figures or tables they created, with proper citation to The Journal.

3. Third-Party Material

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any copyrighted material (images, charts, questionnaires, etc.) included in their manuscripts.

4. Educational Use

Non-commercial educational use of The Journal content is permitted with proper citation, provided the material is not altered and The Journal is clearly acknowledged as the source.
